On November 18, 2023, the 13th “Northeast Asia Forum of Jilin University and Peking University” was held at Jilin University. The forum was jointly organized by the Northeast Asian Research Center of Jilin University, the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences of Jilin University, the Asia-Pacific Research Institute of Peking University, and the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University, with the theme “Changes Unseen in a Century and the Future of Northeast Asia.” This conference marked the 13th academic seminar since Jilin University and Peking University signed an agreement on strengthening exchanges and cooperation in international studies in July 2009. It also represented the first off-line meeting of the “Jilin University–Peking University Northeast Asia Forum” after a five-year hiatus.
The opening ceremony was presided over by Professor Cui Jian, Vice Dean of the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University. Professor Qu Hongmei, Dean of the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences of Jilin University, and Professor Li Hanmei, Dean of the Asia-Pacific Research Institute of Peking University, delivered opening remarks respectively.
Eighteen scholars from Asia-Pacific Research Institute of Peking University, School of International Studies at Peking University, Institute of International and Strategic Studies Peking University, School of Foreign Languages, Peking University and Department of History, Peking University as well as from Jilin University’s Northeast Asian Research Center of Jilin University, Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University, School of International and Public Affairs, Jilin University, Institute of National Development and Security Studies, Jilin University, Institute of North Korean and South Korean Studies, Institute of Japanese Studies, and Institute of Russian Studies participated in the conference. The discussions focused on three major themes: “Strategic Adjustments of Northeast Asian Countries Amid Changes Unseen in a Century” ,“Northeast Asian Security Situation Amid Changes Unseen in a Century”, and “Regional Cooperation in Northeast Asia Amid Changes Unseen in a Century” and featured in-depth exchanges and lively debate.
At the conference, participants exchanged views on major regional hot issues such as U.S.–Japan–ROK trilateral security cooperation, Russia’s “pivot to the East” strategy, Russia–DPRK interactions, the history and future of China–Japan–ROK relations, and Mongolia’s foreign policy adjustments, and mutually benefited from a wide range of insightful and valuable perspectives from each other.
Professor Zhang Huizhi, Deputy Director of the Northeast Asian Research Center of Jilin University, and Professor Li Hanmei, Dean of Asia-Pacific Research Institute of Peking University, highly praised the conference in their concluding remarks, stating that they would continue to promote the deepening development of such cooperative relations. They also expressed hope that participating scholars from both sides would further enhance personal friendships, strengthen exchanges, and deepen academic cooperation, thereby contributing to regional peace and stability.
