Academic Seminar on “Asia-Pacific Security and Economic Situation” Successfully Held

    On November 18, 2023, the academic seminar on “Asia-Pacific Security and Economic Situation” was successfully held in Shanghai. The event was jointly organized by the Institute of International Studies of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS), the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University, and the editorial office of Northeast Asia Forum, and was hosted by the East Asian Studies Division, Institute of International Studies, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (East Asian Studies, IIS, SASS).

The opening ceremony was presided over by Liu Aming, Research Fellow and Deputy Director of the Institute of International Studies of SASS. Wang Jian, Research Fellow and Director of the Institute of International Studies, and Professor Wu Hao, Dean of the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University, delivered opening remarks respectively. Wang Jian introduced the historical development, organizational structure, research activities, and Northeast Asian studies of the institute, noting that Jilin University is an important institution in Northeast Asian studies and expressing hope that both sides would strengthen communication and establish a strong academic partnership in the future. Wu Hao introduced the historical origins, institutional structure, and disciplinary development of Northeast Asian studies at Jilin University, expressing expectations that academic exchanges and cooperation between the two sides would contribute further intellectual insights to Northeast Asian studies. Both sides also held extensive discussions on the current status and development of regional and country studies, Northeast Asian issues, and China–Japan–ROK relations.

The seminar focused on two major themes: Asia-Pacific security and cooperation, and restructuring and cooperation of Asia-Pacific industrial chains. Key topics included the regional order in Northeast Asia, models of regional cooperation in Northeast Asia, U.S. deterrence strategy, Japan’s foreign policy, digital governance and restructuring of Asia-Pacific supply and industrial chains, China–Japan–ROK industrial chain and supply chain cooperation, East Asian industrial cooperation under the RCEP framework, China–ROK semiconductor industrial chains, and competition among China–Japan–ROK automotive battery enterprises.

 At the closing ceremony, Liu Aming, Deputy Director of the Institute of International Studies, and Senior Editor Xu Jia, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Northeast Asia Forum, stated that the research topics of both sides were well aligned, the topics were valuable, and the content was rich. They noted that the seminar was highly productive and emphasized the need to further strengthen exchanges and cooperation to jointly enhance research capacity in Northeast Asian studies.
