High-End Symposium on Northeast Asia International and Regional Studies-"Current Status of Economy/Industry in North Korea and the Future of Economic Cooperation in Northeast Asia" Successfully Held

    On November 29th, the lecture "Current Status of Economy/Industry in North Korea and the Future of Economic Cooperation in Northeast Asia" of the High-End Symposium on Northeast Asia International and Regional Studies was successfully held at Jilin University. The lecture was jointly organized by the Northeast Asian Research Center of Jilin University, the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University and the Special Committee for Northeast Asian Regional Studies, Academic Association for International Cultural Exchange. The Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University invited Dr. Kim Soojung, a research member of the Korea Industrial Research Institute, to deliver the lecture. Associate Professor Xuan Chunji of the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University hosted the lecture.

    Dr. Kim Soojung received his Ph.D. in economics from Korea University and has taught at Korea University, Dongguk University, and Duksung Women's University. He is currently an Associate Research Member of the Korea Industrial Research Institute. Dr. Kim's main research interest is inter-Korean economic cooperation.

    In the first part of the lecture, Dr. Kim introduced the development process of the status of China, Japan and South Korea in global value chains, analyzed the preconditions and possible effects of North Korea's entry into global value chains (GVCs), and the prospects and difficulties of regional cooperation in East Asia. In the second part of the lecture, Dr. Kim introduced the history of industrial development of China, Japan and Korea in GVCs, expectations of future GVC transformation, and the impact of climate and environmental issues on global trade and supply chains. In the third part of the lecture, Dr. Kim introduced the current status of economic cooperation in East Asia. In the fourth part of the lecture, Dr. Kim introduced the current situation of North Korea's economic operation and industry, the impact of the international environment on North Korea's economic development, and the prospects and requirements for North Korea to join the global value chain. Finally, Dr. Kim gave an outlook on the prospects of industrial cooperation in East Asia and the problems that may arise, and then explained the impact of the DPRK's (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) participation in GVCs on the future development of the East Asian region.

    During the Q&A session, the students who attended the lecture were eager to ask and learn. Dr. Kim answered the students' questions and actively discussed with the faculty and students, and the atmosphere was lively. At the end of the event, Associate Professor Xuan Chunji said that Dr. Kim's lecture and his research on the topic were of great value, which helped the faculty and students of the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University to clarify their research ideas and discover new research perspectives.
