Contemporary Economy of Japan was founded in 1982 by Jilin University. It is currently the only professional academic journal in China that specializes in Japanese economic issues. It is the journal of the National Association of Japanese Economics. This journal is a comprehensive, systematic and in-depth study of the Japanese economy to promote economic and cultural exchanges between China and Japan, and to transfer experiences and lessons from Japan's economic development, technology improvement, and management. It mainly has columns covering macroeconomics and policies, finance and finance, energy and environment, trade and investment, business and industrial development, and regional economic cooperation.

Contemporary Economy of Japan is one of the Chinese Key Journals, the core periodicals of China Journals of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Chinese Social Science Citation Index Source Journal (CSSCI), and journal of Research Center for Chinese Science Evaluation (RCCSE) by Wuhan University.
