High-End Symposium on Northeast Asia International and Regional Studies- "The New Order of World Economy and the Emerging Power of Multinational Corporations: 30 Years Since 1990" Held Successfully

    On November 25th, 2021, Professor OH CHUGI of the Faculty of Commerce of Seinan Gakuin University, Japan, delivered an online lecture on "The New Order of World Economy and the Emerging Power of Multinational Corporations: 30 Years Since 1990” at the invitation of the Northeast Asian Research Center of Jilin University, the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University, the Institute of Northeast Asian Studies, and the Institute of Japanese Studies of Jilin University.

    The lecture was hosted by Professor Chen Zhiheng, Director of the Institute of World Economics, Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University, attended by Associate Professor Li Hongmei, Deputy Director of the Institute of World Economics, Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University, with the participation of the Japan research team and graduate students of related majors, either online or in person.

    Prof. OH CHUGI is a member of Japan’s Association of East Asia Regional Studies, a visiting scholar at the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University in China, a former dean of the Faculty of Commerce of Seinan Gakuin University in Japan, an overseas director of Korea's Association of China Regional Studies, a research fellow at Columbia University, a visiting professor at Pukyong National University in Korea, and a visiting professor at Soochow University in Taiwan. And His main areas of research are Japanese outbound direct investment and Chinese state-owned enterprise reform.

    In the lecture, Prof. OH CHUGI analyzed the changes in the world economic landscape and the changes in the emerging power of multinational corporations from three aspects. The first part analyzed the transformation of the emerging economies in East Asia in the world economy since the 1990s and its impact on the world economy; the second part introduced the relationship between traditional multinational corporations and emerging IT-led multinational corporations; the third part explained the role and functions of multinational corporations in the East Asian regional economic cooperation, which was an important starting point for the study of East Asian economies.

    In the question and answer session, Prof. OH CHUGI gave wonderful answers to the questions raised by the students and faculty members. At the end, Prof. Chen Zhiheng expressed his gratitude to Prof. OH CHUGI for his wonderful report and academic exchange. Prof. Chen believed that Prof. OH's report provided us with a new perspective that China, Japan and Korea should further deepen cooperation to find their place in the world under the new situation and explore the path of East Asian economic development in the context of the transformation to digitalization, greening, service orientation and resilience.

    This academic lecture was one of the lectures in the High-End Symposium on Northeast Asia International and Regional Studies and part of the lecture series of Japanese experts. The success of the lecture has enhanced the understanding of the position of emerging economies in the world economy among the faculty and students of the College, broadened their academic horizons and had a positive impact on the academic exchange activities between the College and Japan.
