Northeast Asian Studies College "Academic Workshop of Low Birth and Aging and Socio-economic Developmentin Taiwan" was successfully held

From October 20thto 26th, 2019, the "Academic Workshop of Low Birth and Aging and Socio-economic Development in Taiwan" of the Northeast AsianStudies College of Jilin University was successfully held in Taiwanand carried out a 7-day academic exchange and research.

In order to expand cross-strait academic exchanges and promote the common development and progress of related disciplines of both sides, at the invitation of Taiwan National Chung Hsing University andNortheast Asian Studies College jointly conducted student’s academic exchange activities in Taiwan. After public selection, a total of 12 Ph.D and master students in demography, population, resource and environmental economics, world economics, regional economics, and international politics were determined to participate in this survey.

Through this activity, all teachers and students have an in-depth understanding of the current situation of declining birthrates and aging population in Taiwan, coping policies and socio-economic impacts. At the same time, they learnt about the living conditions of the elderly in Taiwan and the concept of the elderly in Taiwan through visits to elderly care institutions and interviews with the elderly. During their stay in Taiwan, four professors from National Chung Hsing University and National Taiwan University gave themed lectures for the team. From the social phenomenon of the declining fertility rate in Taiwan, combined with the philosophical and economic perspectives, they analyzed the causes of low birthrate and aging in Taiwan.

In addition to theoretical studies, the visiting group gained better understand the living conditions of the elderly in Taiwan and the service models of elderly care institutions by visiting Taiwan’s elderly care institutions and learned about their operating models. Old people play board games together, sing and dance together, and interact cordially. The emotional, positive and optimistic life attitude of the elderly deeply affected the team. These experiences also provide valuable experience for students to conduct social science research in the future.

On October 26th 2019, the visiting team successfully completed the research task and returned on schedule. This visit to study and research activities fully demonstrated the theoretical and academic performance of graduate students in Jilin University. It not only expanded the research horizons of teachers and students, improved research and practical capabilities, but also laid a foundation for our school to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with universities in Taiwan.
